There are more than 20,000 home theater designers in the United States. Despite the recent emergence of industry standards groups such as the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA®), the Imaging Science Foundation, Inc. (ISF) and Home Acoustics Alliance (HAA®), there is a substantial difference in quality among the providers in the industry.

Here are a few of the criteria that Goldline Research uses when evaluating a dependable Home Theater Designer:

  • The number of years of experience
  • The range of services and/or products offered (e.g. home automation, home theater, security)
  • The number of custom home theater installations per year
  • The average project size/duration of custom home theater installations
  • The number of total staff
  • The number of custom installers on staff
  • The number of staff with advanced training
  • Licensing (local, state, federal), if applicable
  • Geographic service area
  • Advanced certifications and/or training held (e.g. CEDIA®, ISF, HAA®, etc.)
  • Number of product manufacturers represented and any manufacturer certifications held
  • Types of products represented (e.g. A/V, lighting, security, etc.)
  • Any advanced software/design tools used
  • The number of active clients
  • The number of total clients
  • An analysis of any client additions in the last 12 months
  • An analysis of any client losses in the last 12 months
  • The quality of client references
  • A review of any outstanding lawsuits, grievances and/or complaints against the firm/professional
  • The firm’s/professional’s key differentiators
